HBC 1019 is a brand new hop variety from the Hop Breeding Company that was just released in small quantities this past fall.  Part of it’s lineage comes from a genetically unique hop species called Neomexicanus.  Neomexicanus hops originated in the mountains of New Mexico and have recently been brought to the Pacific Northwest to be grown and crossed with other varieties.  HBC 1019 is probably our favorite of the Neomexicanus varieties.   We’ve used it in small quantities in Divi and Divi Divi but never by itself.  It’s incredibly potent and offers a mind blowing range of fruit character from honeydew melon and peaches to indistinct tropical fruit but then it also delivers a unique character that some people describe as coconut, rum barrel, or even caramelized banana.  It’s truly unique and tastes nothing like any hop out there.  We used nothing but 1019 in this Pale Ale in the boil, whirlpool, and dry hop.
